Spring Cleaning Guide: Bedrooms
Time to Take Care of the Place Where You Sleep
It’s finally time. You have already gone through so much on your spring cleaning checklist: your bathrooms, your kitchen, your garage. Now it is finally time to address your bedroom.
You might think that cleaning your bedroom is simple, but it isn’t always so simple to do a 100% thorough, deep cleaning. There are all kinds of things you could miss! That is why we have put together this guide for you to use.
We here at Maid Bright have cleaned plenty of bedrooms (and living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, etc) in the Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland community. We know a thing or two about tackling a mess and helping with spring cleaning. Read on for some insights from real maids!
Declutter
Go ahead and take everything out of the bedroom that you can and put it in the hallway. Yes, we mean lamps, toys, clothes, etc.
Separate all items into three piles: keep, throw away, and donate. Sort through all of your things and eliminate that which you do not value, need, use, or enjoy. This will help give you peace of mind!
Once you have sealed up the trash bags and put the items you will donate in a clearly labeled box in your car, you’re ready to move on.
Pay Attention to the Carpets
First, you should vacuum your carpets completely, and treat any stains that you might have with your favorite carpet shampoo or stain remover.
Once this step is done consider a full steam clean. You can buy or rent a steam cleaner, fill the tank with hot water and add vinegar (we recommend vinegar over detergent), and starting from the corners, go over your entire floor. You have to move the machine slowly to allow it to work, and give it six to twelve hour to completely dry.
Now Focus on the Bed
This step is, of course, completely unavoidable. Your bed is probably the most important part of your bedroom!
Sheets
Go ahead and wash all of your linens, even the ones you have in storage. Might as well make sure they are clean (and maybe dust out the linen closet where they are stored while they are all out of there, by the way!)
Pillows
Did you know that it is perfectly safe to wash pillows, not just pillowcases? Go ahead put them in the washing machine, and try to put in at least two at once so that the washer doesn’t throw them around too much.
Just add a regular amount of detergent, but if you are going for that very white and fresh look then add this: 1 cup of powder detergent, the amount of bleach recommended on the product label, and ½ cup of borax.
When drying your pillows try this special trick: tie two tennis balls in two old, clean socks. Toss those socks into the dryer and let them do the work of fluffing up your pillows while they dry!
Memory Foam
Have memory foam mattress topper or pillows? No problem. Just follow these steps.
Don’t use a washing machine. Instead, fill a tub with warm water (just enough to cover what you’re putting in there). Add laundry detergent to the water (maybe 1 tablespoon per pillow as a rule of thumb) and mix it in.
Hand wash your memory foam in the water, massaging it with your hands, then drain the tub and rinse the foam off with clean water. Once done with this you should allow your memory foam to air dry (do not put it in the dryer), ideally outside in the sun.
Comforter
You can wash your comforter in the washing machine as well! We recommend you go to a laundromat and wash it in a large industrial machine that can handle it’s size if it is a truly large and bulky comforter.
Mattress
There are a few steps to cleaning your mattress:
Get your vacuum and use the upholstery attachment and hose to go over all of the surface area on your mattress. Go over the sides and try to get each part.
Now deodorize your mattress by sprinkling it with baking soda and gently rub any problem areas with a scrub brush. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then vacuum all over again, making sure to get up all the baking soda that you can.
Deodorizing is more important than you think–your oils and skin have been in contact with this mattress for years, possibly, and most people don’t realize that their mattress is starting to smell because they have just gotten used to it. Don’t let this be you!
Next? Flip and repeat.
Furniture
You may want to move all of your furniture away from the walls so that you can dust and clean it more thoroughly; either way, you will want to wipe it down, dust it, disinfect it, and generally make sure there are no grimy stains on it.
Make sure that you pay attention to what type of material you are dealing with and treat it accordingly.
Cleaning Wooden Furniture
You can buy a special wood cleaning liquid that helps restore the wood finish or you can make your own solution with a tablespoon of dish soap mixed in a gallon of hot water.
Here at Maid Bright we use organic cleaning supplies that are free of harsh chemicals, and we suggest you do the same!
Windows
You probably already give your windows a good clean and shine every so often. However, we suggest that a deep spring cleaning is a chance to go one step further.
You can take your screens and give them a good, thorough power wash cleaning. Yup, take them outside and turns the hose on them. It can get years of dust and pollen out of your screen!
Make sure to also clean the windowsill! Grab some cleaning fluid and old rags and scrub away years of grime and dirt from your sill. You might find all kind of things in there, including dead insects, so make sure to wear your rubber gloves.
Don’t Forget!
Before you consider yourself finished, have you done these things?
- Dust the ceiling fan
- Wipe off the light switches
- Disinfect and polish your doorknobs
- Remove any stains from your walls
- Clean your mirrors and make them shine!
- Shaken out or appropriately washed any rugs
- Fully dusted your closet and furniture
If you can check everything off of that list then you are done!
Clean Consistently
We all know that the best way to make your spring cleaning less of a hassle is to regularly clean your home. You don’t have to go so far as power washing your windows every month, but make sure to do a simple cleaning once a week and a deeper clean once a month is a great strategy for keeping your home clean.
