Move-Out Checklist
The day has come for you to move to a new residence. But, where do you start with this whole process? There are many moving parts to moving out. The packing, the sorting, the organizing, the CLEANING! We’ve rounded up an ultimate checklist to make your move and transition easier.
Planning Process
First, decide if you will work with a moving company and arrange an estimate. Be sure to inquire if they will be packing up your home if this is something you are interested in. Set a date and time for the move to take place.
Arrange Boxes & Packing Material
Ask family members if they have any boxes they are not using. Many people accumulate large Amazon boxes, or boxes from Costco. Make use of these before buying boxes. Use old tissue paper and bubble wrap if you have any. If not, invest in some moving boxes, packing material and tape to assemble the boxes.
Sort & Organize
This step is the most crucial because the more detailed you are with this step, the easier it will be to pack your belongings and unpack your belongings in your new home. Go through each room of your home and sort items that you are using, want to donate and items you can no longer use. Items you are using should be categorized for instance “Clothes”, “Shoes”, “Toiletries”, etc. Items for donation should also be categorized but add “Donation”. Items that can no longer be used should be trashed. Once everything is organized, you can start packing your items into moving boxes.
Label & Pack
Label each box very specifically with the specific room and items. This will make it easier for the moving company and yourself when the boxes are unloaded.
Cleaning
The actual cleaning needs to take place after the house is completely vacant. You can either schedule a professional cleaning company for a move-out cleaning or do it yourself. A professional cleaning company is equipped for move-in/move-out cleanings. This cleaning will be very detailed and include:
- Bedrooms
- Bathrooms
- Kitchen
- Living Room/Family Room
- Ceiling Fans/Window Sills/Baseboards
- Spot Cleaning on Walls
- Detailed Dusting
- Inside and Outside of Cabinets
- All Appliances
- Countertops
- Floors

Carpet Cleaning
Following a thorough cleaning of your existing home, you will need to schedule a carpet cleaning. We recommend the carpet cleaning after the home cleaning because prior to a carpet cleaning the rugs will have to be vacuumed. Also, after the carpets are cleaned, they are still damp for up to 24 hours. It is best that the cleaning take place prior to this.
Moving can be a frustrating process if you don’t know where or how to begin. With some planning and time management in place, it will become less overwhelming and you will be on your way to enjoy your new home. For more tips and cleaning help, we are a phone call away.
